For my first solo recording I wanted to present a selection centred on good melodies that are (mostly) familiar. For years I've enjoyed the possibilities of playing standards and had never quite got around to documenting this. Some of these tunes you and I have known for years, others I first heard here and there in the weeks before the session, and some were discovered (and one written) while staying in the remote Caithness wilderness for a week. The peace and quiet, long days
and having a fine Steinway grand to myself meant I could spend quality
time with each piece exploring new ways to shape it. So the album has some surprises - but these are time-tested, resilient melodies.
